The Vermont Legislature passed the Universal Recycling law (Act 148) in 2012, which has banned disposal of recyclables (metal, glass, plastics #1 & #2, and paper/cardboard) as of JULY 1, 2015; leaf and yard debris and clean wood as of JULY 1, 2016; and food scraps as of JULY 1, 2020.* Solid Waste Haulers are required to offer curbside collection of food waste as of July 1, 2020. Haulers are not required to offer curbside collection of leaf and yard debris. Drop-off stations are required to collect food waste and leaf and yard debris. Leaf and yard debris are collected between April 1st through December 15th.
Organic material (such as food scraps, leaf and brush, and other materials) make up an average of over 25% of the residential and more than 15% of the industrial, commercial, and institutional waste stream in Vermont. Organics are the single largest type of material that makes up Vermont residential waste. *These numbers are based upon a 2013 Waste Composition Study.
